As a journalist, I believe it is important to see these things in person and show perspectives that are often ignored by the legacy media. So I flew to Calgary and visited a college campus to ask students what they think about separation.

Mark Carney has now been prime minister for over a year.

In the legacy media, coverage of the Liberal prime minister has been largely positive and often less critical than the coverage of Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre.

So, to mark Carney’s one-year anniversary in office, I went out and spoke to regular Canadians to hear what they think of his prime ministership. And to make things more interesting, I visited a college campus in Calgary to speak to young Canadians.

I also asked the students whether they prefer Carney or Poilievre.

It seems that hardly a day goes by without another appalling story about antisemitism in Canada.

One week, a shooting at the Temple Emanu-El synagogue in Toronto. Then, more shootings, this time at the Beth Avraham Yoseph synagogue in Thornhill and at the Shaarei Shomayim in Toronto. Then, last weekend, the hateful anti-Israel Al Quds Day rally took place in Toronto, where an Islamist was seen making hand gestures that made it seem like he wanted to stab and behead Canadians and where attendees held grossly antisemitic signs.

It has been like this since October 7, 2023, and yet nothing has changed. Which begs the question: why?

In the past week, I spoke to two people to try and get answers to that question. Here is what they believe is driving the problem.

“The Time To Have Prevented It Was Oct. 8, 2023”

Georganne Burke, a member of the Jewish community who recently left Canada for the United States amid the rise in antisemitism, spoke to me about her concerns. You can read more about her move from Ottawa to Florida in a piece I wrote for National Review this past summer about Jews fleeing Canada for the United States.

For Burke, the shootings at the synagogues were personal, because one of them was the synagogue she attended when she lived in Toronto.

“It was very personal to me…. I have many, many friends who go to synagogue there. My daughters both used to live literally around the corner,” she said.

Burke shared deep frustration with the Canadian authorities, including law enforcement, the Carney government, the Ford government, and Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow.

“I’m so enraged with the City of Toronto, the police there, the provincial officials who have responsibility for this, and the federal government that has responsibility for this. I can’t begin to tell you how angry I am. I’m past the point of feeling bad. I’m past the point of being upset. I’m way beyond that.”

“Olivia Chow… all of a sudden, she’s worried about this. She spoke up for the first time in a long time about this. But I don’t believe her. I don’t believe her because she has proven by her actions, her affiliations, and her words that she does not actually care about our community.”

Burke believes political correctness, or what many call “woke” culture, has been a factor in Canadian politicians choosing not to take concrete actions on antisemitism in Canada, leading to the situation we are in today.

Many members of the Jewish community also believe political leaders have been hesitant to take concrete action against antisemitism, aside from the occasional statement. And even when they do occasionally speak out, they often say something to the tune of “we condemn antisemitism and Islamophobia.” This comes despite the fact that Jews in Canada are often terrorized by radical Islamists. During a press conference outside one of the targeted synagogues, a Toronto Star journalist asked an official if they were worried about an increase in Islamophobia following the synagogue shooting.

“(They say) in the name of political correctness and in the name of wokeness, ‘Oh, well, we have to protect the free speech rights and the human rights of these (antisemitic protesters).’ No, you don’t. They’re not exercising free speech and human rights. They’re violating the free speech rights and the human rights of another segment of Canadian society.”

Burke worries it may now be too late to reverse course.

“I don’t know how you put these things back into the box, close it up, and get rid of it. I just don’t know.”

“You can’t prevent it now. You can only prosecute it. The time to have prevented it was October 8, 2023, or maybe even before that, maybe in 2021 when they were campaigning against Jews. This is a longstanding Canadian problem. Antisemitism is not new to Canada. You can look back historically and see that it was one of the more antisemitic places.”

“We Need To Have A Serious Conversation About Immigration.”

Dimpee Brar, Director of Engagement for Allies for a Strong Canada, a pro-Israel group, believes that in addition to being despicable attacks on Canada’s Jews, the synagogue shootings represent an attack on Western civilization.

“It now seems to be more dangerous to be a Jew in Canada than in any other G7 nation. The war has really been brought home. But this (is also) an expression of anti-Western animus.”

“Our enemies understand something that many of our citizens are now asleep to, which is the fact that the most visible expression of the Biblical inheritance of our nation are our churches and synagogues. That’s why churches must burn, and that’s why synagogues must be attacked. It is an attack on the West. This is a war on the West that is taking place here.”

Like Burke, Brar believes politicians have failed and have allowed a two-tier justice system to emerge.

“We have the most feckless politicians I have ever come across. This is a bipartisan problem,” she said.

“I would say that there is a no tier basically. Where were the police officers that night? Have we not seen a synagogue already being attacked? They only acted after the fact. Three synagogues in one week. These are not isolated incidents. These are not accidents. These are the opening salvos of a campaign against the West.”

Beyond law enforcement, Brar believes there also needs to be a conversation about immigration.

“I will always say that the one thing no one is speaking about is immigration. We need to have a serious conversation about immigration. And it’s not as much about immigration as it is about national security.”

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre addressed a crowd of thousands at the Conservative convention on Friday evening, ahead of a leadership review that he won with 87.4 percent of the vote.

The speech, which lasted about 50 minutes, touched on a variety of issues, including the cost of living, immigration, crime, oil and gas, as well as trade with the United States. Poilievre also addressed internal party matters, pledging free and open nomination processes.

A central theme of the speech was perseverance. Poilievre entered and exited the stage to Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” and said at the end of the speech, “When you start something, you never give up.”

“We must unite to end antisemitism and the attacks on our places of worship. And stand with our Jewish friends and neighbours who are under attack like never before. We want Jews to feel comfortable and safe. They should be able to wear the Star of David, put up the mezuzah, and wear a kippah everywhere and be proudly Jewish all around.

That’s the story of Canada, isn’t it? It’s incredible. Protestants and Catholics tear each other’s eyeballs out for hundreds of years on the other side of the pond, and they came here and got along. Yes, we squabble. Yes, we get on each other’s nerves, but we don’t fight each other because of religious or sectoral differences.

We get along with our next-door neighbors regardless of where their grandparents live. When newcomers arrive in this country, just as it has always been, we will ensure that they leave differences at the doors.”

“Why keep going? Because we want our kids to have the same promise that we had.

Pierre Poilievre has won his leadership review at the Conservative Party of Canada convention.

He received 87.4 percent support, securing a second chance to lead the party into the next federal election against the Liberals.

A result of 87.4 percent is above the 80 percent threshold that is generally considered strong support. While Poilievre only needed 50 percent of the vote to remain leader, it is widely believed that anything less than roughly 66.7 percent (two-thirds) would make it politically difficult to continue as party leader.

Ahead of the vote, Poilievre delivered a speech that drew several standing ovations from the crowd.

The Conservative Convention is here, and I am in Calgary to cover it.

There are three main things that will occur over the next three days at this convention:

1. Pierre Poilievre’s leadership review

2. Elections for the party’s board (the National Council)

3. The debating and voting of policy resolutions, in which delegates, party members from all across the country, will debate and vote on policy proposals. These resolutions are not binding, but they help influence the party’s policy direction.

There are 62 policy proposals will go through breakout sessions before a final list is sent to the convention floor for debate and voting.

It is worth noting that these policies are non-binding, meaning they are not official platform commitments. However, they can influence the party’s future electoral platform.

Out of those 62 proposals, several have caught my attention.

There are immigration proposals, including measures related to deportations; new anti-DEI and anti-gender-ideology proposals; a “Jordan Peterson Policy”; and a proposal to protect Canadians from political de-banking. There are also pro-life policies and pro–self-defence policies.

Deportation Policies:

Policy A-11: Deportation of Foreign-Origin Convicted Criminals

This policy, sponsored by the Peace River–Westlock Electoral District Association (EDA), seeks to have a future conservative government “pursue immediate deportation as the primary option for all non-citizens in Canada who are convicted of an indictable offense.”

“This would include a default permanent ban on re-entry with options of asset forfeiture. Appeals for re-entry could be considered on a case-by-case basis.”

Policy A-8: Including Deportation In The Sentencing of Foreign Criminals

The policy, sponsored by the Abbotsford–South Langley EDA, seeks to have the party support “requiring that any sentencing of a criminal convicted of a serious and/or violent crime, and/or one involving the use of a firearm, who is not a citizen of Canada provide for the expeditious deportation of such person from Canada, regardless of the situation in that person’s home country.”

Policy C-2: Accountability for foreign students

The policy, sponsored by the Mount Royal EDA, seeks to have the party affirm that “student visas are privileges, not rights. We believe that engaging in violent crimes, hate incitement, or acts of hateful intimidation by student visa holders should result in immediate revocation of their status and deportation through due process.”

Anti-Woke Policies

Policy A-16: Parental Right to Body-Affirming Therapy for Kids

This policy, sponsored by the Kitchener Centre EDA, seeks to have the party “believe that parents have the right to arrange for body-affirming talk therapy for their gender-confused child,” and “oppose the federal ‘Conversion Therapy Ban’ which criminalizes parents for doing so.”

Policy A-15: Ending DEI Judicial Appointments

This policy, introduced by the Etobicoke–Lakeshore EDA, states that “federal judicial vacancies must be filled promptly so that superior courts operate efficiently at full bench strength. A Conservative government will appoint judges based on their qualifications, experience, and respect for the rule of law.”

Policy B-17: Merit Over DEI

This policy, sponsored by the Eglinton–Lawrence, seeks to add that to the policy handbook that “the Conservative Party believes in the principle of meritocracy, defined as a system where individuals succeed based on their abilities, efforts, and achievements—not their background or social status.”

Policy C-7: Judicial Accountability

This policy, sponsored by the Dufferin-Caledon EDA, seeks to have the party support “parliamentary reviews of judicial appointments and consideration of renewable fixed terms for federally appointed judges.”

“This ensures public accountability, prevents ideological entrenchment, and reinforces democratic oversight while respecting judicial independence and the constitutional role of the courts.”

Policy A-9: Jordan Peterson Policy

This policy, sponsored by the Medicine Hat–Cardston–Warner EDA, seeks to have the party believe “that no person should have their professional accreditation revoked solely for voicing their opinion or refusing compelled speech.”

Policy B-5: Protection from Political De-Banking

This policy, sponsored by the Carlton Trail—Eagle Creek EDA, seeks to make the party believes “that no Canadian should be deprived of essential financial services based on personal beliefs or lawful activities.”

“A Conservative Government will enact legislation to safeguard Canadians from arbitrary de-banking practices, fostering a fair financial services system that respects Canadian’s freedoms while maintaining institutional stability.”

Pro-Life Policies

Policy A-13: Abolish The Conservative Party’s Pro-Choice Position

This policy, sponsored by the Similkameen–South Okanagan–West Kootenay EDA, seeks to delete party’s current position on abortion, which is “A Conservative Government will not support any legislation to regulate abortion.”

Policy A-20: Born Alive Policy

This policy, sponsored by the Lethbridge EDA, seeks to have the party affirm that it believes “all Canadians, including any child born alive, should have reasonable access to timely, quality health care.”

This policy appears to resemble “born alive” legislation proposed in the United States, which seeks to penalize health-care practitioners who fail to provide care for an infant that is born-alive from an abortion attempt.

Policy A-18: Life-Affirming Care and Post-Abortion Support Framework

This policy, sponsored by the Haldimand-Norfolk EDA, add the following to the Conservative policy book: “We support a Life-Affirming Care and Post-Abortion Support Framework that: protects lawful, non-coercive counselling and pregnancy care centres; expands practical supports for women continuing pregnancy (grants, childcare, housing, campus protections, flexible leave); establishes post-abortion, trauma-informed mental-health services and transparent data reporting; and promotes awareness of compassionate, life-affirming supports.”

Pro-Self Defence Policies

Policy A-1: Castle Law

This policy, sponsored by the Wellington-Halton Hills North EDA, seeks an amendment to the criminal code “to presume any force, including lethal force, is reasonable when used to defend against an uninvited intruder in one’s home. Canadians protecting themselves, their families, or their property inside their home should not face prosecution for acting decisively against intruders.”

Policy A-17: Protecting Victims’ Rights

This policy, sponsored by the Calgary Shepard EDA, states that “The Conservative Party shall enact a law providing greater protection from prosecution when reasonably defending yourself and your family from criminal actions. Such a law will prioritize the right to reasonable self-defence in favour of the law-abiding citizen over the criminal.”

CBC Policy

Policy B-16: Freeing The CBC From Government Funding

This policy, sponsored by the Lethbridge EDA, states that: “We acknowledge the vital role that news and media plays in Canada and believe a clear policy framework should be established that: 1. ensures the news and media landscape exists as a free market; 2. minimizes government intervention and regulation in the market; 3., protects freedom of speech.”

And that “The Conservative Party believes the control and operations of the CBC/SRC as an entity should be accomplished through independent, non-governmental funding.”

This week: Venezuelan refugees get lectured by white, latte-sipping trans activists about why the authoritarian tyranny that forced them to flee their country is actually great. Did York University censor a Conservative MP? And Mark Carney continues to seek an illegitimate majority government, to which I say: proceed with caution.

Venezuelan Refugees vs Woke White Liberals

We are almost at the one-week mark since President Trump’s spectacular military operation in Venezuela, in which he captured socialist tyrant Nicolás Maduro to bring him to justice for his narco-terrorism.

Since then, we have seen two very different groups in the streets.

The first are Venezuelan refugees. There are roughly eight million of them around the world who fled the horrific socialist tyranny imposed by Hugo Chávez and Nicolás Maduro. They are overwhelmingly grateful to President Trump for finally bringing that nightmare to an end. For example, some of my Venezuelan friends celebrated with 8 a.m. champagne after waking up to the news.

The second group is predominantly white, left-wing activists. These are the people marching in the streets, angry, protesting Trump’s actions, and calling for the freeing of Maduro so he can return to oppressing Venezuelans.

Pro-Maduro protests were seen in Montreal, Ottawa, as well as New York City and Seattle. You know, all the liberal hellholes. The Montreal protest was organized by Celeste Trianon, a local trans activist who seems to always be out protesting the “current thing.” Meanwhile, at a protest in Seattle, a trans activist screamed “Free President Maduro” and claimed that Maduro is a feminist who uplifted women. Ask María Corina Machado, who had to flee Venezuela fearing political persecution, what she thinks of that. I think she would call bullshit.

In Ottawa, a spectacular exchange was caught between my Venezuelan friend and conservative activist Ana Rizo, who fled Venezuela for Canada, and notorious perennial Ottawa protester Deana Sherif. Rizo tore into Sherif, who had the audacity to claim that the rigged Venezuelan election was “one of the most transparent elections.”

At this point, I think our friend Deana has counter-protested nearly every possible cause, and I say this as someone who covers protests in Ottawa.

I saw her counter-protesting the Freedom Convoy. Then I saw her at the Million March for Children, protesting parents who opposed gender ideology. Then I saw her counter-protesting a pro-Israel march. I once saw her counter-protesting Trudeau protesters by screaming, “I love you Justin Trudeau,” as Trudeau exited his office. I have seen her at anti-carbon-tax protests protesting in favour of the tax. And it goes on and on…

Here is an interesting thing about the pro-Maduro Western left.

In the past, the far left supported people who opposed everything it claimed to stand for, such as Palestinians, for example. The justification was always that they were “oppressed,” and that the left stood with them. That argument had some merit. There have indeed been many Palestinians and Muslims marching in the streets for Palestine for more than two years.

But Venezuela is different. There are no Venezuelans protesting Trump. Venezuela has been liberated. Venezuelans are celebrating in the streets. Yet these woke activists have put on their white-saviourism and demand that the communist dictator who oppressed Venezuelans be allowed to return and continue oppressing them.

Why?

Because it is not actually about the people and always about communist revolution.

The reason the far-left supports Palestine is that they see it as a revolutionary project. Do not take my word for it. Take theirs. Activists have repeatedly said that the Palestinian cause is an anti-capitalist and anti-Western cause. That is why they support it, and that is why they support Maduro. Maduro stands against capitalism, so they back him.

The far-left does not stand for anything. They simply stand against the West and capitalism. They oppose the greatest society on the planet, and the greatest economic system ever invented, and they will back the world’s worst evils, from radical Islamists to communist tyrants and everything in between.

And if you think it is bad now, just wait. Just wait until something happens in Iran. They will come out to support the Islamofascist Iranian regime. Mark my words.

Did York University Censor a Conservative MP?

Conservative MP Garnett Genuis (who, full disclosure, I worked for on the Hill back when I was in high school) accused York University’s student union on Thursday morning of blocking his campus visit for ideological reasons. This triggered a rapid political backlash, with calls for the university to be defunded and sued.

The York Federation of Students has since claimed that it had no knowledge of the event. Genuis clarified that the decision came from the York University Student Centre, a separate student group. The student centre confirmed that it did not approve the booking but denied any political motivation, saying the request failed to meet standard booking requirements due to insufficient detail and could be resubmitted.

York University itself said it was unaware of the event before the controversy and emphasized that its free speech policy protects diverse viewpoints, while noting that student centres have their own procedures.

I just hope that this so-called “student centre” is telling the truth here and isn’t bullshitting us. Because nobody, and I mean nobody, at York University, whether the administration, the student groups, or the student union, has any moral authority to deny conservatives access to campus.

Let’s not forget that after October 7, the York University student union praised the attack that saw 1,200 Jews killed and many taken hostage as “a reminder that resistance against colonial violence is justified and necessary.” The now York University student president has also praised Hamas. There are professors there who have taken part in the targeting of Jewish businesses. And more…

The administration has tried to distance itself from some of the radicalism. But its hands are not clean either. Like other universities, it has gone all-in on DEI, allowed anti-white discrimination, and also claimed in an official DEI document that Christianity fuels colonialism. As a Christian, I find that to be a hateful statement that makes me feel unsafe (see what I did there).

If I were Genuis, I would take the school at its word that there is supposedly no issue with the event and just show up anyway. Who’s going to stop you? The university & student groups that just told the entire country they are not censoring you?

Be careful what you wish for, Carney

New year. Same old Mark Carney.

Carney is not content with just the two sellout floor-crossers Chris D’Entremont and Michael Ma. He is now looking for even more disloyal Conservative and NDP MPs to join his caucus so he can cobble together a majority government that Canadians clearly rejected in the last election.

Scott Anderson, the Conservative MP for Vernon–Lake Country–Monashee, said in a social media post that the Liberals are “pulling out all the stops” to lure Conservatives. He went on to say that he is rejecting any floor-crossing offers: “It’ll be a cold day in Hell before I even consider betraying my constituents, and you should probably stop asking, because I will certainly advertise it every time you try.”

Nunavut NDP MP Lori Idlout also said she was approached about joining the Liberals and also said no.

Earlier, in an interview with The Globe and Mail, Pierre Poilievre said that a majority government achieved through floor-crossing under Carney would be not legitimate. That comment sparked controversy among Liberals. But Poilievre is right. It would be illegitimate. While such government would function and would be legally recognized, it would be morally illegitimate.

Canadians do not want a Liberal majority. In the 2025 election, only 44% of Canadians voted for Mark Carney’s Liberals, meaning 56 percent did not. There is no mandate for an unchecked majority.

But Carney, being who he is, seems to think he can simply override the will of the people.

To that, I say: be careful what you wish for, Mr. Carney.

I have a feeling, and when I have this feeling, I am usually right, that a lot of Canadians are really not in the mood for this and that if he succeeds in engineering this majority, there is a real chance we could see mass protests in the streets. They would be peaceful, but loud, and they could resemble the Freedom Convoy, albeit without the trucks.

Don’t believe me? Just look at the considerably large protests outside of Michael Ma’s office since his floor crossing.

And ultimately, I believe this would hurt Carney politically. Just like the Freedom Convoy hurt Trudeau politically.

Happy New Year!

2025 changed the trajectory of my journalism career.

What was supposed to be a relatively normal year became one of the most intense and rewarding periods of my professional life.

It began with covering the resignation of Justin Trudeau, a trade war between Canada and the United States, and then an early 2025 federal election. During the campaign, I travelled across the country on a flight pass, often filing stories from airport lounges and late-night flights. I loved every moment of it.

The year was not without challenges however. This summer, I lost my job. It was unexpected and forced me to rethink my plans. After the initial shock, I made a decision to turn that setback into an opportunity and finally pursue something I had wanted to build for years.

With seed funding from generous supporters, I soft-launched EMCN Media this fall while completing my undergraduate degree, which I have now officially completed.

I launched EMCN Media with a clear mission: to help Canadians better understand political, public policy, industry, energy, media, and cultural issues from a fact-based, common-sense conservative perspective.

The fall was meant to test the waters. The results exceeded expectations.

I launched with an exclusive interview with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and quickly saw strong growth across platforms. Since September, YouTube views have grown by 1100%, YouTube subscribers have grown by 1200%, and average YouTube view counts now exceed those of several major legacy media outlets operating with million-dollar budgets. Substack subscriptions have grown by 225%, and I have also received 4 million organic social media impressions.

The plan for 2026

With my degree complete, there is now nothing limiting my time.

Between now and the end of July, the goal is to produce 100 videos and launch a weekly newsletter, while travelling across Canada and abroad to:

1. Show how Canada remains broken under Mark Carney

2. Warn where the country is headed without a change in course

3. Show what is possible

4. Help Canadians better understand their country and political system

All of this will be done independently. There will be no government funding, no government advertising, and no money from political parties.

The first major assignment of 2026 will be coverage of the Conservative Party of Canada convention. The total cost for me and my cameraman is expected to be $3,000.
